This place is good for: Quick break
Their specialty, obvious from their name, is Kona coffee! I don’t have very strong taste buds, but Kona coffee definitely stands out among all the coffee types. It has a stronger flavor and aroma than most coffee. And if it’s your first time, you will definitely be thinking “wow, this is nothing like what I’ve ever had before!” It is slightly more expensive. The internet will tell you all the things that make it so special and rare, but I personally think that the price is justified by the drinking experience itself. Everything is very strong. The moment when the coffee is freshly brewed and handed to you, you are already caught by the aroma. Then when you drink it, it is a very rich and yet delicate experience.
Back to the coffee shop itself, it is probably the only chain in Japan that specializes in Kona coffee (so please let me know if you know any local shops that also serve it!) I went to the one in Azabujyuban. I had expected a stronger Hawaiian theme because Hawaiian and Mexican restaurants in Japan tend to have excessive decorations; however, it seems like Honolulu decides to focus on their coffee more.
HOW ABOUT THE COFFEE!? Well, it was good coffee, but the taste was not as rich and the flavour didn’t stand out as much as what I had remembered of a cup of Kona coffee. As I left the shop, I found out that they do sell their beans in the shop and apparently there are different tiers too, so I am assuming that the one that they use to serve one is probably from the lower tiers. At least I got a possible explanation to why my coffee was milder than expected.
They also serve dessert pancakes. I frankly don’t know why the Japanese married pancakes with coffee, but it is totally a signature Japanese combo. My friends ordered some so I had the chance to taste it. They are pretty good so I will recommend their pancakes too if you are a coffee and pancakes person, although I personally don’t find them match.
P.S. The photo above is taken from Google Maps. I generally avoid using other people pictures because I want to share 100% real personal experience, but I forgot to take a picture while I was in the shop this time.
Enjoy your coffee ☕️
